Escape to Create

ÒA Celebration of Art, Life and CommunityÓ

An Artist-in-Residence Program along the Gulf of Mexico

In the New Urbanist town of Seaside, Florida

Escape to Create is a month-long retreat for writers, artists, scholars and other creative people who are fully engaged with art and ideas. Established 17 years ago,

Escape to Create has sponsored more than one hundred artists involved in a wide range of disciplines including the literary arts, fine arts, musical composition, crafts, photography, film, history, and architecture.

Escape to Create takes place every January along the beautiful Gulf of Mexico

in the Panhandle of Florida.

The 2010 program will take place January 4th - February 1st.

Deadline for submission of applications is June 15, 2009.

The main objectives of this multi-disciplinary, artist-in-residence program are:

To foster the creation of art that teaches and inspires

To offer artists an environment that supports their creativity

To advance the experience of art and culture as an integral value of community life

Artists are chosen through an application process to work on a specific project throughout their time here. Applicants must demonstrate a solid record of achievement in their field as well as the ability to take full advantage of this residency to further their work.  Escape to Create is open to artists of various levels and ages with a preference for individuals working at the professional level in their fields.  Artists spend the month in an individual cottage or apartment that has been generously donated by homeowners in Seaside and adjacent communities.

A maximum of eight artists will be selected from the following disciplines:

VISUAL ARTISTS -- painting, sculpture, photography, craft, video, film

MUSICIANS — composer, composer/performer, scholar

WRITERS -- fiction, non-fiction, poetry, film, screenplay

SCHOLARSHIP -- art, architecture, environment, academic, theoretical

During the residency, artists are required to give a public presentation as community service.  This usually includes a lecture, a reading and book signing, or participation in a group panel or exhibit.  Visits to the local charter middle-school are also an option.   Applicants are asked to include a proposed community service in your application.  Visual artists are encouraged to bring matted works to include in group gallery show.

For scriptwriters and playwrights, there is the opportunity for collaboration with The Seaside Repertory Theatre, SeasideÕs own professional theatre company.

Since January 1993, the program has sponsored more than 100 artists engaged in a wide range disciplines including the literary arts, fine arts, musical composition, crafts, architectural research, photography, and film. Many have distinguished themselves in their field of work and continue to contribute to the cultural fabric of our time.

Leslie Neumann, Visual Artist

"Thank you most sincerely for the opportunities that Escape to Create offered me.
It was a terrifically productive month and the mental space the residency provided me was invaluable to completing my project.  My time in Seaside will remain for me a cherished memory of the perfect combination of place, people and work."

Matthew Whittall, Composer
